LANCASTER, Calif. - It’s been one year since Sergeant Steve Owen was shot and killed in the line of duty. Since then, Sergeant Steve Owen Memorial Park has been named in his honor. Now, there is a new honor as part of the 14 Freeway will be named after him.
“My husband, Sergeant Steve Owen, was a law enforcement officer to the community, but he was our world. He was my world, my best friend and the love of my life,” said Tania Owen.
October 5 2016 is the date Tania Owen describes as the worst day of her life. One year later, Sergeant Owen’s memory lives on in his family and in the Antelope Valley community.
“When the LASD says we never forget, we mean it. The outpouring by the Antelope Valley community has remained steady and strong. This freeway sign is the fourth honor in Steve’s name,” LA County Sheriff’s Deputy Jim McDonnell.
The sign dedicates a portion of the 14 Freeway in Owen’s name. Assemblyman Lackey sponsored the measure that made the renaming possible.
“Sergeant Owen was one of the greatest examples of why we should embrace our servants who choose the path of law enforcement for their service. He was not only committed to enforcing the laws of the land but he was also a very, very dedicated community servant,” said Lackey.
The portion of the highway from Avenue R to Avenue S is now designated Sergeant Steve Owen Memorial Highway. The location was chosen specifically by his wife Tania.
“He was the sergeant for the entire Antelope Valley so I wanted those signs to be placed in that particular area for both station deputies who travel down below to be able to see them and for myself, so I can be reminded of my husband every day,” said Tania Owen.
The Sergeant Steve Owen Equestrian Center and Sergeant Steve Owen horse trail have also been named to honor the fallen sergeant.
