Ten years ago, Superstorm Sandy flooded downtown, including the Hudson Square neighborhood. That area is on the westside, North of TriBeca and South of the Village.
To help prevent future disasters, the Hudson Square Standard was developed. The plan includes planting special trees that capture more storm water than normal ones. More than 530 of these special trees have been planted.
Samara Karasyk is the President and CEO of the Hudson Square Business Improvement District. She joined "News All Day" with more on this first-of-its-kind program in the city.
In addition to these trees, underneath there is special soil as well as permeable pavers, which look like bricks but actually absorb extra water.
