Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, who was reelected Tuesday, said voter dissatisfaction is behind the increase in Republican votes in New York City.
While New York’s 28 electoral votes were secured by Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump gained more votes in the city than he did in the 2020 election. Still, the city's largely Democratic congressional delegation will return to the House, with Malliotakis continuing to represent the 11th Congressional District, which covers southern Brooklyn and Staten Island.
“I think the results that you saw throughout the city and throughout our state—where President Trump did extraordinarily well, much better than he did in the last two races—was because people are fed up with the one-party Democrat rule,” Malliotakis said during interview on “Mornings On 1” Thursday.
Malliotakis remains the only Republican representing New York City in Congress but suggested that local election results show a shift toward the GOP, particularly in New York State Senate and Assembly races.
“I think what you're seeing is this is a correction that's taking place across our city and state,” she said. “People want to see more of a balance. They want to see an alternative viewpoint. And the Republicans have provided that.”
Trump’s previous administration saw a slew of defections, with many of his former allies refusing to support him during his 2024 presidential bid. However, Malliotakis expressed optimism about the direction of his incoming administration.
“President Trump is someone who holds the people who work for him accountable,” she said. “I think that he will surround himself with good people, smart people, successful people—yes, some of them left, and some of them stayed, but he was so productive.”
Malliotakis expressed her “full faith” in Trump's plans for tax cuts, job creation, wage increases and border security, and commented on how a Trump administration could impact New York City.
“He wants to see it saved from the one-party destruction that has been caused by our governor and, quite frankly, the mayor as well,” she said. “He wants to see it be safe again. He wants to see our country be secure, and he wants to make sure that it’s well run and managed.”
