1. 'He wanted us dead': Central Park Five members rip Trump on DNC's final night

The “Central Park Five” — a group of Black men who were convicted as teenagers and later exonerated of raping and beating a New York jogger — spoke at the final night of the Democratic National Convention, seeking to remind people that Donald Trump once placed full-page newspaper ads calling for the return of the death penalty in response to their case.

After they served years in prison or juvenile detention centers, another man confessed to the crime, and a reexamination of DNA evidence linked him solely to the rape. Trump has refused to apologize for his 1989 ad.

2. Second fire in less than two years breaks out at Queens e-bike shop

A fire broke out at an e-bike shop in Richmond Hill, Queens Thursday morning. It’s the second fire to tear through the location in less than two years, according to the FDNY.

In March 2023, the FDNY said a bad lithium-ion battery caused a fire at the same location. On Thursday afternoon, fire officials determined the cause to be a lithium-ion battery yet again. The battery exploded but was not charging at the time, the FDNY said in a social media post.

3. Pelosi appears to blame Hochul for Dems losing House majority

Speaking on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., appeared to blame New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s 2022 reelection campaign for dragging down Democratic House candidates statewide and thus in part costing the party their majority in Washington.

In the 2022 midterms, Republicans flipped four Democratic-held seats in New York and won another close race by less than a percentage point. All were districts that voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, but voted for Lee Zeldin, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, that year.
