1. NYC cleans up after Ida deluge; subway service still limited
Thursday, the day after New York City was deluged by the remnants of Hurricane Ida, we got a better sense of the damage the storm left behind.
New Yorkers are cleaning up and contending with significant property damage while mourning the loss of loved ones and members of their community. At least 13 New Yorkers died, many due to their basement apartments flooding with historic rainfall.
Much of the subway system was running with limited service, with lines having delays, partial or completely suspended service, or reroutes due to residual storm damage. There were also widespread bus delays.
But amid the damage, there was some optimism: some people were rescued by their fellow New Yorkers, and conditions improved on some roads, including the Major Deegan Expressway, which opened to northbound traffic Thursday evening.
2. Flooding from Ida in NYC only the latest reminder of the climate crisis
The record rainfall from Huricane Ida’s remnants, which flooded homes, streets and train tunnels, was only the latest reminder that climate change — and the extreme weather it causes — is a real and present danger.
The quick-moving storm crippled much of our infrastructure and again begged the question: what the city will do to better prepare?
3. Hochul signs eviction moratorium extension into law
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday signed bills that will extend New York’s eviction moratorium through Jan. 15 and expand the state’s rental assistance program.
In this new eviction moratorium bill, lawmakers created a path for landlords to challenge whether tenants have truly been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in court.

Your Daily Listen
As the remnants of Hurricane Ida came pouring down on Wednesday night, it quickly became clear that the city was ill-equipped to respond to the unprecedented flash flooding that caused over a dozen deaths.
NY1’s Juan Manuel Benítez, Courtney Gross and Emily Ngo talk about the devastating impact of global warming on New Yorkers, especially the most vulnerable among us, and explain why the city needs to invest more heavily in climate-resilient infrastructure.
They also weigh in on the extension of the eviction moratorium, which the state legislature approved during a special session that Gov. Kathy Hochul summoned.
