While ballots are still being counted, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said there is a “clear pathway” for Democrats in the House of Representatives.
“We still have a clear pathway taking back the majority,” he told NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday, his first interview since election results came out.
According to Jeffries, Democrats will have between 212 to 214 seats in the House, which is more than the 194 seats that were held when Donald Trump won in 2016. He added that they’re keeping an eye on districts in the west.
When asked if he would consider staying on as a minority leader, he said he would continue his service.
“And if I have the opportunity to continue to lead House Democrats in either the majority or the minority, it certainly would be an opportunity to and continue to be a great honor,” he continued.
Even though Trump saw some victories in New York, Democrats were able to flip three House seats in the state.
"I think that there are lessons to be learned from this election in all directions," he said.
