The next speaker of the House could be determined by some key battleground seats in New York.

Those seats include Congressional District 22, which consists of Syracuse and Utica.

Republican Rep. Brandon Williams is the incumbent and has held the seat since he was elected in 2022.

Democratic state Sen. John Mannion won his primary this June. He will now face Williams in this competitive seat that went for President Joe Biden by 12 points in 2020.

But this is not the only race that's up for grabs this year, as control of the House could run through key battleground districts around the state.

Grant Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk more about the battleground upstate districts.

“Because the district was slightly redistricted in a way that made it somewhat more favorable to Democrats and because of the nature of the two candidates in this race, I would say that Mannion would probably be the favorite in this race,” Reeher said.
