The city’s Department of Sanitation will kick off its curbside Christmas tree collection at the end of the week, the agency said Tuesday.
Workers will pick up New Yorkers’ discarded trees starting Friday, Jan. 6, with collection set to continue through Saturday, Jan. 14, the department said in a press release.
The agency does not collect trees at the same time as it does trash and recycling, so pickups “may not occur immediately,” the release noted.
New Yorkers should “remove all stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments” before placing the trees out for collection, and trees must “not be wrapped in plastic bags,” according to the release. The collected trees will be “chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into compost for the city’s parks, institutions and community gardens.”
Residents who wish to bring their trees to a Mulchfest site to be “chipped and recycled” will be able to drop them off through Sunday, Jan. 8, the release said. The mulch will be used to “nourish city trees and plants,” the release added.
More than 20,000 trees are collected for “tree-cycling” each year, according to the department.
For New Yorkers looking to discard artificial Christmas trees, the department said to remove the base and trunk and recycle them with metal, glass, plastic and cartons. All lights, ornaments and tinsel must be removed before placing the tree for recycling.
The department also suggests residents sell their artificial trees, or donate them by looking for donation opportunities on the city’s website.
