Lunar New Year, known as the Spring Festival in Asian countries, is a major holiday celebrated by communities on Jan. 29. This year’s holiday marks the year of the snake, but some Asian countries may follow a different zodiac.

The holiday, a 15-day celebration, begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. Here are some events being held to mark Lunar New Year across the five boroughs.

The Bronx

Wave Hill

Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wave Hill will host an event for families to learn about the year of the snake and decorate a fan "inspired by snakes in nature that call the Bronx home." There will also be a "holiday-inspired" storytime session at 11:30 a.m.

The event is free with admission to the grounds.

Allerton Library

Thursday, Jan. 30, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

Allerton Library will host an event where children ages 6 to 12 can create a craft to celebrate the year of the wood snake. 

Advanced registration is required. 

Brooklyn

Brooklyn Children's Museum

Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. 

The museum will teach children about Lunar New Year traditions through live music, dance performances, storytelling, calligraphy workshops and Kung Fu workshops.

Tickets are required. 

Albee Square

Saturday, Feb. 1, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Albee Square and City Point BKLYN will celebrate the holiday with lion dance performances, music sets and family activities. Participants are encouraged to wear red clothing for good luck. 

Admission is free, but RSVPs are encouraged for the family activities and indoor events.

Manhattan

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Saturday, Jan. 25, from noon to 5 p.m.

The museum will celebrate the year of the snake with performances, interactive activities and artist-led workshops. 

The event is free with museum admission. 

Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade and Festival

Sunday, Feb. 16, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (parade starts at 1 p.m.)

This year's Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade will kick off at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Mott and Hester streets before heading east on East Broadway and up Forsyth Street to Grand Street. The celebration features visuals, food and performances, including the annual lion dance.

A festival with booths will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Bayard Street between Mulberry and Mott streets.

Queens

Flushing Lunar New Year Parade and Festival

Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. 

This year's parade — which will start in front of the 109th Precinct, at the corner of Union Street and 39th Avenue — features lion and dragon dances, a marching band and more.

Glow Cultural Center

Sunday, Feb. 2

The cultural center will celebrate Lunar New Year at Flushing Town Hall, with activities including a cultural fair, variety show and parade.

Registration is required.

Queens Botanical Garden

Saturday, Feb. 8, from noon to 4 p.m.

The garden will host a celebration for families that includes lion dances, tai chi, arts and crafts and more.

Admission is free. Prospective attendees can register online.

Staten Island

Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden

Saturday, Jan. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The center is celebrating the year of the earth snake with "performances, treats, tales, and traditional crafts."

Tickets are required.

West New Brighton Library

Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. 

The library is hosting an event for children ages 5 and up. Attendees will be able to "create a fun craft," and a children's librarian will talk about Lunar New Year.

The program is free.
