City birth certificate records show there were 388 Emmas and 739 Liams born in 2022, the health department said.
Liam has been the top name for boys since 2016, and Emma has been the top choice for girls since 2017.
After Liam, the most popular boys’ names, in order, were Noah, Ethan, Lucas, David, Jacob, Aiden, Joseph, Daniel and Alexander.
Alexander moved into the top 10 last year, taking the spot that previously belonged to Benjamin.
For girls, the most common names following Emma, in order, were Mia, Olivia, Sophia, Leah, Ava, Esther, Isabella, Luna and Amelia.
Nine of the top 10 girls’ names were the same in 2022 as they were in 2021, the health department said. Esther moved into the seventh spot, pushing Sofia off the list.
However, the department noted that if Sofia and Sophia were counted as a single name, it would have been the most popular name in 2022.
In all, city records show that 99,459 babies were born in the five boroughs in 2022. There were 39,320 babies born in Manhattan, 11,048 in the Bronx, 23,318 in Brooklyn, 20,109 in Queens and 5,664 on Staten Island, according to the health department.
“What makes our city special are the New Yorkers — big and small — who call the five boroughs home," the city’s health commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, said in a statement. "So welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah and all the other newborns to New York. Our city and world are better for your presence in the new year and beyond."
