1. Ex-U.S. Rep. George Santos sentenced to over 7 years in prison for fraud and identity theft

Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos was sentenced today to over seven years in prison, sobbing as he heard his punishment.

Santos, who pleaded guilty last summer to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, appealed for mercy, saying in court through tears that he was “humbled” and “chastised” and realized he had betrayed his constituents' trust.

2. Luigi Mangione pleads not guilty to federal murder charge in killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO

Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty today to a federal murder charge in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as prosecutors formally declared their intent to seek the death penalty.

Mangione, 26, stood with his lawyers as he entered the plea, leaning forward toward a microphone as U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett asked him if understood the indictment.

3. Man fatally stabbed on subway after arguing with rider who stepped on his shoes, police say

A man was stabbed to death during the morning rush hour in the subway system today after a dispute with another rider who had stepped on the man's shoes, police said.

Police and medical personnel responded to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall subway station in Lower Manhattan shortly after 8:30 a.m. for a 911 call about a person being stabbed. The victim, 38, was found unresponsive with multiple stab wounds to his torso and brought to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

4. Protesters clash with campus security at City College

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the gates of City College in Harlem on Thursday afternoon.

At one point, tensions escalated when a school security officer appeared to use pepper spray on demonstrators, according to a video circulating on social media. Additional footage shows campus police working to prevent protesters from breaching a fence to access school grounds.

5. Manhattan attorney charged with raping, torturing six women

Handcuffs, fake cash and a cattle prod. These are some of the items found in the apartment of a Manhattan attorney charged with more than 100 counts of sexual assault.

Ryan Hemphill, 43, was indicted on 116 counts, including predatory sexual assault and rape.

6. Open Streets returns Saturday with car-free events across NYC

New York City streets will go car-free tomorrow in celebration of Earth Day.

The city’s Department of Transportation announced that 54 streets and plazas across the five boroughs will transform into pedestrian spaces from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., marking the official start of the city’s Open Streets program.

7. Expert discusses Pope Francis’ funeral, pope selection process

As Pope Francis’ funeral approaches, Kevin Ahern, professor of religious studies at Manhattan University, joined “Mornings On 1” today to explain the funeral process and how the next pontiff will be selected.

Pope Francis’ coffin was sealed today during a ceremony attended by many cardinals after final mourners arrived to pay their respects at St. Peter’s Basilica ahead of his funeral tomorrow.

Blending into nature: New north end for Central Park as Davis Center opens

The Davis Center at the Harlem Meer is a new multi-use facility at the north end of Central Park, with swimming in the summer, ice skating in the winter and plans to be used as a public green during the remaining months.
