Today's Big Stories
1. DOT expands overweight truck crackdown on BQE
With the city still years away from taking action to shore up the triple cantilever section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, officials hope expanding a crackdown on overweight trucks will reduce wear and tear on the aging roadway.
The city has already been using roadway sensors that can weigh a truck while in motion to issue violations for overweight trucks traveling toward Queens on the BQE. Starting Monday, they’re going to use those sensors to look for trucks violating weight limits in the expressway’s Staten Island-bound lanes.
2. Zohran Mamdani maxes out fundraising for mayoral primary
Democrat Zohran Mamdani announced Monday that his campaign has reached the maximum funding limit for the June primary, making him the first candidate to do so.
Mamdani, an assemblyman representing Astoria, has raised more than $8 million, included projected public matching funds, from around 18,000 donors citywide, his campaign said.

3. At Nadine Menendez trial, prosecutors portray her as 'partner in crime' with her convicted husband
Nadine Menendez and her prison-bound husband — former U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez — were “partners in crime," a prosecutor told a jury Monday as opening statements began in her trial over allegations that the power couple accepted bribes of cash and gold bars.
The longtime senator was convicted last year of accepting bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from three New Jersey businessmen. Now, a new jury will hear much of the same evidence about Nadine Menendez, 58, after her trial was postponed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
An international student at Cornell University involved in pro-Palestinian protests has been asked to surrender to immigration authorities as he seeks to block deportation actions by the Trump administration.
The government action against Momodou Taal comes as President Donald Trump ratchets up efforts to arrest and deport noncitizens who participate in such protests or who demonstrate against Israel's military actions in Gaza.
5. Brooklyn chef explores the power of dates in new cookbook
In her new cookbook “Hot Date!,” Brooklyn-based chef Rawaan Alkhatib explores the many uses of dates, a fruit she calls a “powerhouse plant.”
Drawing from her Middle Eastern and Indian heritage, Alkhatib describes the book as a love song to the ingredient.
In an interview on “Mornings On 1,” Alkhatib further highlighted the fruit’s historical significance.
