1. Judge sets Trump's sentencing in hush money case for Jan. 10, but signals no jail time
In an extraordinary turn, a judge today set President-elect Donald Trump's sentencing in his hush money case for Jan. 10 — little over a week before he's due to return to the White House — but indicated he wouldn't be jailed.
The development nevertheless leaves Trump on course to be the first president to take office convicted of felony crimes.
2. Rudy Giuliani testifies at contempt hearing as lawyers for election workers pursue $148M judgment
Rudy Giuliani testified today at a contempt hearing to decide whether he has dodged and deceived lawyers trying to recover a $148 million judgment for two Georgia election workers, lamenting the speedy deadline imposed on him to turn over information about his assets.
The former New York City mayor testified in Manhattan federal court that the two-week time frame he was given to respond to the requests “was very short,” in comparison to how long he was given to provide information in 15 to 20 other court cases he's involved in.
3. Mayor Adams officially lifts drought watch for New York City
New York City officially lifted its drought watch on Friday, two months after it first took effect.
Mayor Eric Adams said “above-average precipitation” within the past two months, New Yorkers’ conservation efforts and melting snow upstate helped replenish reservoir levels.
4. Live updates: As N.J. congestion pricing hearing looms, officials wage war of words
With just under 48 hours until the start of congestion pricing, New Jersey is making a last-minute push to halt the tolling plan. A judge in Newark has been hearing the state’s request for a temporary restraining today.

5. Transportation officials expect easier mobility for New Yorkers in 2025
Transportation officials hope New Yorkers will have increased mobility in 2025, and believe fewer cars from congestion pricing won't be the only reason.
Transportation Department Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez says the city will continue street safety through redesigns and lowering the speed limit on some roads because of Sammy’s Law. NY1's Samantha Liebman has more on what to expect this year.
6. Planned partial suspension of R line in Brooklyn begins Friday
The R line will undergo a planned partial suspension for two weekends — Jan. 3 to 6 and Jan. 10 to 13 — as the MTA conducts structural maintenance, the transit agency said.
The partial suspension will take place between 36th Street and Bay Ridge-95th Street from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, the MTA said.
