Today's Big Stories

1. Queens Midtown Tunnel reopens after water leak, officials say

The Queens Midtown Tunnel has fully reopened after a leak temporarily closed it in both directions, officials said.

City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said the north tube had been temporarily converted to handle traffic to Queens and into Manhattan while the south tube was closed to traffic.

2. Overall crime, shootings down in August, NYPD says

The city saw a drop in overall crime for the eighth straight month in August, with shootings down by nearly 15% year over year, NYPD data released today shows.

The city’s overall crime index dropped by 6.4% last month compared to August 2023, with a double-digit drop in murders, as well as drops in robberies, burglaries, grand larcenies and auto thefts, the NYPD said.

3. City opens 24 new school buildings ahead of first day back

When New York City public school students return to classrooms this week, quite a few will enter through the doors of new buildings.

The city has officially opened 24 new school buildings in time for the first day of classes on Thursday, Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference outside P.S. 487 in the Bronx this morning.

4. New school year brings a new math curriculum for high schoolers

A year after launching a new reading curriculum, the city is now rolling out a new math curriculum for nearly all high schools.

The curriculum takes a problem-based approach to learning algebra, and was used in 260 schools last year — but reaction from teachers who have used the new curriculum already is mixed.

5. NYPD chief says parade was safe despite shooting incident

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell today addressed a shooting at the West Indian American Day Parade that left one person dead, noting that last weekend's event was much safer compared with previous years.

During an interview on "Mornings On 1," Chell said the department has been consistently stepping up safety efforts for the annual parade, which spans several blocks in Brooklyn along Eastern Parkway, but acknowledged the difficulty posed by the large crowd.

6. Decision 2024 updates: Trump campaign says it raised $130 million in August

Former President Donald Trump's campaign says that it raised $130 million in August, with 98% of the donations comprising that total being $200 or less.

The figure would be a slight downturn from the $138.7 million Trump's campaign raised in July, which was overshadowed by the $310 million Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign says it raised last month.

After an exchange of attacks over abortion rights, Republican U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro is moving to shift the debate in the race for New York's 19th Congressional District, rolling out a new TV and digital advertisement today hitting Democratic challenger Josh Riley on immigration.

The ad, previewed for Spectrum News ahead of its release, invokes the recent arrest of a reputed Peruvian gang leader in Endicott, saying, “DC Insider Josh Riley helped write Biden’s open border policies that let him in.”
