1. These are the four ballot measures facing New York City this general election

In the 2022 midterm election, voters in New York City will have four ballot measures to consider alongside their choices of candidates vying for city, state and federal offices. 

One of the measures is a question facing voters across the state. The remaining three are focused on New York City. 

2. Hochul: Kids age 5 and older eligible for bivalent COVID booster

Children ages 5 and above are now eligible to receive the bivalent COVID booster shots that are meant to increase protection against variants of COVID-19, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced today.

But the number of children that are eligible in New York is expected to be smaller than the adult population. Only 39% of kids ages 5 to 11 in New York have completed the initial two-dose vaccine series. People between the ages of 12 and 17 have a higher vaccination rate of 72.8%. 

3. Man charged with manslaughter in Queens subway death

A Queens man was arraigned on manslaughter and assault charges after he allegedly punched another man on a subway platform, sending the man onto the tracks, where he was fatally struck by a train, prosecutors said today. 

Carlos Garcia, 50, was charged with second-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault on Tuesday in connection with 48-year-old Heriberto Quintana’s death, a complaint filed with the Queens District Attorney’s office shows.

4. 'It's very stressful': Weeks into the school year, some 3-K providers still haven't been paid

For the first time, Sasha Maslouski’s home-based child care center, Snapdragon Place, is part of the city’s 3-K program. The program is free to parents, and providers like Maslouski are supposed to be paid by the city.

But more than five weeks into the school year, Maslouski told NY1 she has not received a penny.

5. Spirit Airlines shareholders approve $3.8B sale to JetBlue

Spirit Airlines shareholders voted today to accept a $3.8 billion buyout from JetBlue Airways, but the deal could still face a challenge from federal antitrust regulators.

JetBlue emerged as the winner in a bidding war with Frontier to acquire Spirit, the nation's biggest budget airline.

6. Two arrested after pit bull attack on Staten Island: NYPD

A man and a woman were arrested on charges including animal cruelty after several pit bulls bolted out of a Staten Island home and bit at least three people on Staten Island, the NYPD said today. 

Rodney Jones, 48, of Staten Island, and Shontay Holland, 29, of Brooklyn, each face four counts of reckless endangerment, 10 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the Tuesday incident, police said.
