1. 5 key takeaways from Adams’ executive budget

Mayor Eric Adams has outlined his latest version of the city’s next budget, revising from a preliminary spending plan released earlier this year to include more social services, renew organics recycling and boost funding for public safety initiatives.

Here are five main takeaways from Adams’ latest budget document. 

2. MTA convenes panel to crack down on fare evasion

The MTA has put together a panel that will come up with “effective and equitable” ways to crack down on fare evasion, chair and CEO Janno Lieber said Tuesday. 

The percentage of subway riders evading fares has been on the rise in recent years, jumping from around 3% to 12.5%, Lieber said at an Association for a Better New York event Tuesday morning. 

3. Funeral for FDNY firefighter Timothy Klein to be held Friday

Mourners will gather at a church in Queens on Friday to remember fallen FDNY firefighter Timothy Klein. 

Klein’s funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church in Belle Harbor at 11 a.m. on Friday, the Diocese of Brooklyn confirmed Tuesday. 

4. Hochul says mask mandate not under consideration as COVID-19 cases rise in New York

A return to an indoor mask mandate is not under consideration at this point, Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday said, while COVID-19 cases have risen across New York driven by a surge in a variation of the omicron strain of COVID-19. 

Still, despite the rise in cases and cases per 100,000 people, the hospitalizations in New York have not sharply increased so far this season.  

5. Vice President Kamala Harris tests positive for COVID-19

Vice President Kamala Harris has tested positive for COVID-19, her office announced in a statement.

"She has exhibited no symptoms, will isolate and continue to work from the Vice President’s residence," her office said in a release.

6. Hochul calls on lawmakers to change election law to replace former LG on ballot

Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing state lawmakers to change the state's election law and allow candidates on the ballot to be removed as she searches for a replacement to her former lieutenant governor, Brian Benjamin.

Young softball players inspired by FerryHawks’ Kelsie Whitmore

Presley Setaro has been playing softball since she was seven. Today, she’s a busy 10-year-old playing shortstop and pitcher for two different leagues on Staten Island.

Setaro says she knows she wants to be in this sport for a long time, so when she saw the Staten Island FerryHawks sign a female player, Kelsie Whitmore, she couldn’t help but smile.
