Relatives can only speculate about the last moments Destini Smothers experienced before her death.

What You Need To Know

  • Police say a tow truck operator found the body of a missing woman in the trunk of an abandoned car in Queens
  • Destini Smothers, 26, went missing last November after celebrating her birthday at a bowling alley in Woodside

  • Relatives say Smothers' boyfriend was the last person that reported seeing her alive

"She's a fighter" said Johann Daily, her cousin. "She fought."

Family members learned Wednesday that her body was found in a trunk of an abandoned car, four months after she went missing while celebrating her birthday at a bowling alley in Woodside.

"She was having a good time and she was supposed to end it with leaving to have some more fun, not to be murdered, not to go missing on her birthday," said relative Tima Fowler.

Police say a tow truck operator was in the process of removing a black vehicle which had been parked without plates on Lefferts Boulevard and made a grisly discovery.

"Upon opening the trunk, the operator observed a deceased individual positioned on their side," said NYPD Assistant Chief Ruben Beltran, Borough Commander of Queens South.

Relatives say Smothers, 26, was visiting Queens from Troy last November and believe the car belonged to her boyfriend.

"He has some involvement because that was his car, that was the car he was driving," said Fowler.

Now, after months of searching for her they're urging police to track him down -- saying he was the last person who reported seeing Smothers alive.

"He actually got in my car and took me where he said she jumped out in Astoria, took me and my family. He sat in my backseat behind me. I don't understand how he did that," said Fowler.

Relatives say Smothers leaves behind two young boys who are now grieving their mother as the medical examiner works to determine the cause of death.
