Elementary schools in Staten Island’s orange zone will open their doors once again on Wednesday.

That will come two days after schools serving students in grades 3-K through fifth grade reopened in the rest of the city.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a large swath of the borough, including all of the South Shore and some parts of the mid-Island, an orange zone due to the high rate of coronavirus cases in the area. That meant restrictions on things like indoor dining -- and the closure of schools.

But under new state guidance, schools in orange zones can “test out” of those zones -- meaning they can reopen as long as they test a portion of students and staff once a week. The city’s new reopening policy already requires weekly testing at every open school citywide, so the Staten Island schools will not need to go beyond the new testing regimen to open their doors.

District 75 schools in the orange zone will be able to reopen on Thursday, along with District 75 schools across the city.

Only students who have already signed up for blended learning will be eligible to attend schools in person.
