EAST AMHERST, N.Y. -- For those living on Casey Road in East Amherst, the busy thoroughfare is an accident waiting to happen.

"People travel, 40 [mph,] 50, or more and they don't pay any attention to the speed limit," said resident Bren Price.

Casey is bookended by Transit Road to the east and Casey Middle School to the west. Its limited sidewalks and narrow shoulders paired with a lack of stop signs makes for a treacherous walk home from school or casual bike ride.

Price says new homes and developments continue to pop up on Casey, a factor that has also contributed to its problems.

"The increased residency, the increased traffic, and nothing is slowing down that traffic," said Price.

According to officials, the Town of Amherst was awarded $976,000 by the state to add bike lanes to Casey Road along with sidewalks on its north side.

And Price says while sidewalks will make the road safer, there's still work to be done.

"I think that's a good starter. I wish they would pay attention to people that are speeding here," said Price.

Officials from the town say there isn't a confirmed date for the start of construction.
