MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — President Donald Trump will be among the many dignitaries who will attend Pope Francis’ funeral tomorrow.
Gavin Gamber is turning back the clock to the first decade of the 2000s.
"It was a good time for sure, without a doubt," he said. “Yeah, it’s pretty cool, you know, to just know you’ve been a part of history and you got a little seat at the table.”
These are memories from when Gamber worked at the White House for the George W. Bush administration as the senior advance representative.
“The one thing about the president: he always liked to travel, so I was always on the road. I was responsible for traveling to different cities and setting up all the logistics for the president wherever he traveled around the world,” Gamber said.
One big event that Gamber helped organize was the former president’s visit to the Vatican for the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005.
“The logistics were crazy because you can imagine, not only our airplanes were there, but you had the airplanes of 90 other world leaders there. So the logistics at the airport alone were incredible,” he said.
Now, with President Trump’s team attending Pope Francis’ funeral, Gamber says he expects things to be similar.
“Your support for the Catholic Church, and then also at the same time, there’s going to be a lot of logistics that those advance guys face. You know, I would have loved to have gone back to help them out again,” he said.
As Gamber reflects on how much work went into the logistics of planning a big event for a president, he knows this weekend is a serious undertaking.
"Typically, on a foreign visit, the advance team will go out about 14 days ahead of time. You always have to be careful and make sure that everything is planned, from when he arrives until he leaves," he said. "It’s just one of the most important parts of the job."
Gamber appreciates the importance of his former role and expects President Trump’s foreign visit to be a memorable event.
