WASHINGTON — The Trump Organization is selling “Trump 2028” merchandise, in what can be seen as a nod to a potential fourth run for the White House by the current second-term commander in chief.
President Donald Trump himself has talked about such an idea despite the Constitution clealy dictating that his current term must be his last.
Attention was drawn to the new merchandise this week when the X account of Trump’s political operation posted a picture of Eric Trump — the president’s son who, along with his brother Donald Trump Jr., run the Trump Organization — sporting one of the new “Trump 2028” hats.
“@EricTrump rocking the new Trump 2028 hat!” the caption on the Trump War Room account post reads.
The next presidential election is set to take place in 2028
The Trump Store on the Trump Organization website shows the hats available for purchase for $50.
The organization is also selling T-shirts with the new branding that includes the words “Rewrite the Rules” in parentheses. Those are going for $36. "Trump 2028" drink koozies are also up on the website.
The president has mentioned the idea staying in the White House past his current term multiple times since his return to office, often in situations and ways that appeared to suggest the comments were in jest.
However, the president said last month that he was “not joking” about such a possibility, telling NBC News in a phone interview that he is serious and that there are “methods” in which he could pull it off in the face of clear constitutional limitations. He did not elaborate on such methods and said it was too early to be thinking about it.
The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which was added in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms in the White House, clearly mandates that U.S. presidents cannot serve in the nation’s highest office “more than twice.”
Trump’s current term marks his second stint in the office, although his terms have not been consecutive.
One Republican member of Congress, Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., has already introduced legislation that would amend the 22nd Amendment to allow Trump in particular to serve a third term.
Ogles’ proposal would change the language of the nearly 75-year-old amendment to state that no person can serve as president “more than three times.” But it also goes on to state that no person can “be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms,” an addition that would make the proposed change apply to no other living president except for Trump and, theoretically, former President Joe Biden if he sought a second term.
In a post Thursday on X, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said of the merchandise: "Trump’s organization is out here selling Trump 2028 hats like the Constitution is just a suggestion. Reminder: The 22nd Amendment exists. You can’t run for a third term."
Trump previously sought ways to stay in office after his first term despite losing the election to Biden.
