FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. — A Flagler County family is still waiting for answers two years after Christian Romero was killed in a crash in Orange County.
No one has since been charged in the case.
During the initial investigation, Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that a 15-year-old allegedly driving a stolen car with five other teenagers inside it, ran a red light on Dean Road at State Road 408 and crashed into 23-year-old Romero’s car, killing him.
For the Romero family, they’re remembering Christian the best way they can, looking at pictures of him smiling and enjoying life.
“He had a very tight-knit group of friends; they were all very close. He was very outgoing,” Dawn Romero, Christian’s stepmom, said. “Those kids took a part of our life that we will never get back. There’s no closure for us until this case is resolved.”
State Attorney Monique Worrell's office told Spectrum News that the crash is still part of an active investigation and they are unable to comment on the case at this time.
“It’s horrible. Two years — we’re suffering over here but they’re OK over there with no consequence, and that’s what we’re looking for,” said Christian's father, Miguel Gunercindo Romero.
Christian’s sister, Aryanna, says she takes her brother with her every day by wearing a necklace with his picture inside. She even named her son "Prosper" to honor his life.
“I can’t imagine my son will never know his cheerful uncle who won’t be there during every step of his life because someone else took it upon themselves to take his life,” Aryanna Romero said.
The family owns and operates Romero’s Tuscany by The Sea Italian Restaurant in Flagler Beach.
It’s their home away from home.
“It’s very special for me to be in the business, to be in the restaurant, because it’s kind of like, he’s there,” Miguel Gunercindo Romero said.
His family says Christian loved being at the restaurant, helping his dad prep in the kitchen.
When times are tough, they visit Christian’s table.
“I’m sad because I miss him. I expect to see him at this table all the time,” Miguel Gunercindo Romero said.
FHP officials say records indicate their traffic homicide investigation has been completed and it was handed over to the State Attorney’s Office for review.
