WORCESTER, Mass. - The beginning of a major holiday weekend for christians is underway, all culminating with Easter.
Worcester Catholics heading to mass at Saint Paul's Catherdral on Good Friday are looking forward to Sunday.
Over at Palma’s Bakery in Worcester, holidays mean a lot of baking for the Durmillari Family.
“One of our most popular Easter items is the Easter bread, in fact. So, the Easter bread, it's a celebratory loaf to mark the arrival of Easter," Irli Durmillari said. "So basically, all the items that we gave up for Lent, like sugar, butter, milk, eggs, those are the Easter bread has all those ingredients. And it just signifies that that Easter is arriving soon.”
Monika Durmillari has owned Palma’s for nearly 15 years and still uses some recipes from the original owner.
“That recipe is from Palma who used to own the place, it's over 40 years (old)," Durmillari said. "I worked with her daughter in-law, especially where she helped me a lot to do special Easter Breads.”
“And it's all handmade," Durmillari said, "hand stretched.”
While Monika runs the bakery fulltime, she gets some help around the holidays.
And come Easter Sunday, for the Durmillari’s, the bakery shuts down to celebrate with family.
“There's about 20 to 25 of us and some foods that - we obviously have an Easter bread that we take with us," Durmillari said, "but we like lamb, potatoes, just some of the food that we haven't had this Lent.”
