The man shot by officers after they said he fired a rifle at them while barricaded in his home early Thursday morning is facing multiple charges, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

David Jacobs, 40, was taken to Novant Health NHRMC after the shooting and was still listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police said Jacobs, once released, will face charges of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. Officials said additional charges could be forthcoming pending the investigation.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a shots fired call on the 4800 block of Whitner Drive. The suspect, armed with a rifle, barricaded himself in his home, according to a release.

Officers attempted negotiations until roughly 6 a.m. Police said the suspect fired at officers during this time.

The suspect eventually exited the home, and it appeared he would comply with officers, police said, but that quickly changed.

Officers attempted “less lethal means in an attempt to persuade him to comply,” the release said, but fired on the suspect when he once again retrieved his rifle and began threatening officers.

The shelter in place was lifted for area residents shortly after the incident ended.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol.
