One of Port Authority police officer Anthony Varvaro’s young sons helped carry his casket as friends, family and his colleagues held on to each other for support.

Hundreds of people attended the 37-year-old’s funeral Thursday, days after he was killed.

Varvaro was headed to work at the 9/11 memorial Sunday when he was killed by a wrong-way driver. That driver died in the crash as well.

Varvaro served in the Port Authority Police for six years and was a Major League Baseball pitcher before that.

He played for the Mariners, Braves, Cubs and the Red Sox in his baseball career

David Carles, a Staten Islander, said Varvaro was his mentor.

“He was my childhood baseball idol. We all have one,” Carles said.

He recalled asking him questions about striking out Derek Jeter and facing Miguel Cabrera. But to Carles, that wasn’t Varvaro’s focus.

“He didn’t care about that. It was, ‘David, are you getting your swings in? How are you doing? Did you go over three? Did you strike out three times? Did you hit the game winning home run?’ That’s what he cared about,” he said.

Varvaro was from Staten Island and those who knew him say he was an integral part of the community.

Carles says more than anything, Varvaro was a family man.

“He loved his kids. He loved his wife,” Carles said, mentioning that Varavaro would rush to get home to his family after going to the YMCA together. “You know, he didn’t work on the weekends. It was all for the kids” said Carles.

At his funeral Thursday, Varvaro’s colleagues called him a selfless and exemplary police officer.

“I mean, he volunteered that day to come in to serve because he loved the command of the World Trade Center where he worked and the 9/11 anniversary,” Edward Cetnar, Port Authority police superintendent, said. “You know, like I said, on his day off, he came into work to provide security for the detail to make sure the families of the 9/11 folks were protected that day and that’s the type of person he was.”

Varvaro is survived by his four children and wife.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family during this time.

"Today has been an overwhelming mix of grief and pride as we experienced our final services for Anthony. We thank PAPD, FDNY, NYPD and Father Jerome for giving Anthony the hero's sendoff he deserved," Varvaro's family said in a statement. "We want to thank our friends and family, the Staten Island community. We've together said the past few days how there are no words for all of this. Well we have no words for you. Thank you, thank you, we love you."
