MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. – A memorial will take place Sunday for a Mount Holly police officer who died after being shot during a breaking and entering incident Friday morning.

The community is invited to honor Officer Tyler Avery Herndon, 25, at the Mount Holly Municiple Complex on December 13. The candlelight vigil will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Around 3:30 a.m. Friday, Officer Herndon responded to a breaking and entering call on Beatty Drive. Officers located an armed suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Joshua Tyler Funk, and several shots were fired, according to a release.

Officer Herndon and the suspect were both shot during the exchange and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Herndon suffered serious injuries and died just a few hours after arrival, police say. He had been employed by the Mount Holly Police Department for less than two years.

Funk suffered minor injuries, police say, and was released after treatment. He has since been transfered into the custody of the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office and is charged with murder.

Two other Mount Holly police officers and a Gaston County police officer were involved in the incident. All three have been put on administrative leave, pending an investigation.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

Mount Holly Police Department says it, along with the Internal Affairs Bureau, will also conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether department policies and procedures were followed during the incident. This is standard procedure in any officer involved shooting, officials say.
