Staten Island residents got the inside scoop on how the Department of Sanitation turns food scraps and yard trimming collected curbside into compost.

Tours were given at the composting plant in Travis-Chelsea as part "Open House New York" weekend where people can take tours of various historic buildings and facilities that are not normally open to the public.

Visitors took tours of the facility and chatted with experts about the composting process. The family-friendly event was filled with games, prizes, and more.

"What we really want to do is show New Yorkers that if they food scraps in that brown bin, if they collect their yard waste not only are they doing good for the environment by keeping it out of landfills; but we're actually turning it into a really valuable resource here," said Julie Raskin, with the Department of Santiation.

After the tour, visitors were also offered free compost to take home with them.
