After severing its ties with fast food chain Chick-fil-a because of backlash from the L-G-B-T-Q community, the Staten Island Yankees celebrated Pride Night at the ball park Friday.
The Baby Bombers hit the field in rainbow fashion with new pride inspired jerseys. The uniforms were sponsored by the non-profit "You Can Play," which is dedicated to ensure that all athletes are treated equally, are respected and safe regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. After the game the jerseys worn by the players were to be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to the organization. Organizers are happy to receive the community's support.
Will Smith, President, Staten Island Yankees says "I'm really surprised at the public sentiment and how, how much of a story it's been because people are interested really in the design of the jerseys. I mean if you look at it's essentially our home jerseys."
Pride Night first occurred at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in 2015.
