The NYPD Special Victims Unit is converting old office space in the St. George section of Staten Island into a new waiting area and interview room for victims.
Officials say new paint, furniture, and artwork will make the space more comfortable for victims who have to report an assault.
"When a survivor comes forward to come forward to report a sexual assault they're showing a tremendous amount of strength and courage,” said Judith Harrison, Commanding Officer of the NYPD Special Victims Unit.
“It's very important that when they muster up the strength and the courage to come forward that we support them as best we can," she said.
The new facility will be completed at the end of the year.
