A woman from Staten Island is facing charges she stole money from an NYPD charity for the families of slain officers.
Police say Lorraine Shanley took $410,000 from "Survivors of the Shield" while serving as the group's volunteer treasurer.
She hid under an umbrella Thursdya as she left her arraignment on bank fraud and identity theft charges.
Prosecutors say Shanley used about 20 percent of the charity's total funds for her personal use.
Of that, $25,000 allegedly went to landscaping at her house.
A neighbor who spoke with NY1 was surprised by the news.
"Good people. She got caught into something that she probably realized she didn't mean to do in the end. I hope she gets out of it and I hope it works out for her. Return the money, do whatever you got to do," said the neighbor.
Shanley faces up to 32 years in prison if convicted.
