Falling debris from the Bayonne Bridge construction project damaged several cars Monday.

Port Authority officials say it happened around 9:45 a.m. on Newark Avenue.

They say a crew was demolishing a pier when a chunk of concrete fell to the street and damaged three vehicles.

NY1 caught up with business owner Vaughn Bellocchio who owns an auto body shop nearby the incident.

He says debris often falls from the bridge so much so that he keeps a collection of it all in his office.

Bellocchio says the Port Authority did put-up safety nets in the past to solve the issue, but after a while - he says they disappeared.

"They were all torn and tattered and they took them down and that's the last we've seen of the safety nets. If the safety nets were up today, that accident wouldn't have happened," said Vaughn Bellocchio, owner of The Polishing Pad.

There were no injuries in the incident.

In a statement, a Port Authority Spokesman said, We are currently undertaking a full evaluation of today's incident with our contractor to learn exactly what happened and to determine a proper course of action moving forward."
