A moment of calm is very welcome in the Dilgen house.
14-year-old John Hudson Dilgen suffers from a rare genetic skin disease commonly known as E.B. Burn-like wounds cover close to 75 percent of his body, making many everyday tasks very painful.
Bathing is especially hard, so his family set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for a special micro-silk bathtub, hoping to raise $40,000.
"And then we tripled it, and it's just, it's unbelievable to think about," John Hudson Dilgen said.
With more than $130,000 raised, his family can not only get the tub, but they can also build it downstairs, in a more convenient place.
"Well, it's heartwarming," John Hudson’s mother Faye said. "I mean, it's nice for John, I think, to see messages from people of support and love, and he's been reading them."
A group of contractors even agreed to build the tub for free.
Besides the overwhelming support from the community, John Hudson also got the attention of one of his favorite celebrities. Daymond John from the show Shark Tank sent a video message.
"I think you are an amazing young man," he said via Facebook, "and that you are very brave, and you inspired me."
Along with the message came a presidential ambassador coin given to Daymond John from Barack Obama.
"So he gave it to me because I inspired him," John Hudson said. "So I just keep looking at it because it means a lot, and it's just amazing to think about that I inspired someone who does it for a living."
And the support doesn't end there, Faye and her sisters will run in the NY Half Marathon this spring to raise money for the E.B. Research partnership as John Hudson gets ready to participate in a gene therapy trial.
"I think we're starting on a very positive note, and very exciting," she said. "I think it gives John a lot to look forward to."
As the community rallies around him, John Hudson says he wants to help others who don't have the support system he has.
