A visit from jolly old Saint Nick, and a hospital bed full of presents. It's just what the doctor ordered for Devin Cruz-Henriquez.
"Santa gave me toys!" he said.
The 2-year-old makes regular visits to Staten Island University Hospital due to recurring infections and high grade fevers.
FDNY firefighters from Engine 155, Ladder 78 decked the halls of the pediatric and burn units Tuesday to spread holiday cheer.
"He was having a tough day his morning was filled with you know, uh some fears, some pain and some difficulties, and to have this coming after that, you couldn't plan it any better," said Ray Cruz, who is Devin's grandfather.
The annual toy drive is all in memory of a local hero. Lt. Bobby Ryan died while battling a New Brighton fire back in 2008.
Ryan started the toy drive two years before he passed. His fellow firefighters have vowed to carry on his tradition.
"I would rather he wasn't a hero and my son was here, but I think it's a wonderful thing that he started," said his mother Carol Ryan.
"It makes me feel like I'm at home for Christmas during the holiday season," said Meghan Haddad, who is a patient.
Family and friends say Ryan shared a special connection with the children at the hospital because he was once a patient too.
He suffered from severe burns after battling a house fire in Brooklyn back in 2006.
"What better way to carry on such a great mans legacy than to help the community as a whole?" said FDNY Firefighter Kevin Raney.
A legacy that has given hundreds of patients like Devin a reason to smile.
