Developer Melhon Properties has announced plans for the Riverside Galleria, a shopping destination with more than 370,000 square feet on 21 acres near the Outerbridge Crossing in Charleston.
It's the latest in a number of retail projects in the borough.
The Staten Island Mall is gearing up for a big expansion, and The Empire Outlets are expected to open next year.
In addition to stores, the Riverside Galleria would have a multiplex cinema &and an entertainment space.
The plan also includes developing Richmond Valley Road to Arthur Kill Road for physical access to the water, a wetland and nature preserve, and restaurants with outdoor terraces.
There are no details yet on what national retailers would be located at the new galleria, but John Pitera, a managing director with Cassandra Properties, says several are interested.
He adds that the project would be good for the local economy.
However, for some residents, a new mall raises traffic concerns. Pietra says they have conducted several studies, and are also building an 1850 space parking lot.
The developers are in the early stages of the application process to the city’s Department of Planning, which could take anywhere from 7 months to a year.
If all goes according to schedule, the mall could open in 2018.
