Breanna Stewart knows a thing or two about winning titles. After winning four NCAA National Championships at the University of Connecticut, she has been part of two WNBA Championship teams.
Now, she has a chance to help lead the New York Liberty to their first ever title.
“This is a huge moment for New York basketball, for the Liberty, and we want to take advantage of it,” said Stewart, the 2023 WNBA MVP.
Other key parts of the squad are 2021 League MVP Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu, who helped the Liberty punch their ticket to the finals with a semi-finals series win over the Connecticut Sun.
Now it’s a clash of the titans with Las Vegas, and Stewart says now more than ever, the team has to stick together.
“This is going to be a long series, and it’s not going to be one play that makes or breaks anything, just continuing to play through it,” Stewart said.
Liberty Head Coach Sandy Brondello says after two very physical playoff series, the team has to stay true to their identity as they head into the finals.
“We obviously have respect for our opponent, and they are the champions from last year, but we need to go in and stamp how we want to play at both ends of the floor and have confidence,” Brondello said.
One aspect of this title run not lost on Liberty players and coaches, the opportunity to bring the WNBA to new heights through what should prove to be an epic series.
“People are paying attention, and that’s what we want, we want people to be able to come and appreciate what we are doing out there and so now that we are here and we are doing it at the highest level, it’s really special,” said the Liberty’s Betnijah Laney, who has been another key part of this run to the finals.
As Brondello put it, may the best team win, but hopefully it raises the profile to show the wonderful athletes playing in the league
