Our latest Queens People of the Week are bringing a little sweetness into the lives of others. NY1’s Leisha Majtan filed this report.

Giving back is a way of life for 13-year-old Hailey Vicente.

"People do so much for us so the least we can do is give back to them," said Vicente, one of NY1’s Queens People of the Week.

Vicente has been a Girl Scout since she was in the third grade.Through the years she's done a handful of community clean ups and food drives but says her latest service project is extra sweet.

Dozens of Girl Scouts from the borough recently handed out more than 2,000 boxes of cookies to residents of "Pam's Place", a women's homeless shelter in Long Island City.

"The women in the shelter have experienced many hardships and are really struggling and to see us come in and do these things for them. It really makes their day," added Vicente.

The effort was part of the Girl Scouts' "Operation Cookie" initiative.

Customers can pay for boxes of the famous cookies, which Girl Scouts donate to various charities and organizations.

This year, the Girl Scouts teamed up with the Department of Homeless Services to distribute those donated cookies to 5 shelters in New York City.

"Many times the homeless think no one cares about them and that they're left to struggle on their own,” said Yvonne Ballard of the Department of Homeless Services. “Just having the Girl Scouts come in and show their support to give out cookies. It shows there are caring people in the City."

For both the Girl Scouts and the residents, the day was about so much more than just giving away cookies.

A resident of the women’s shelter said "It means a lot because you know, growing up we never had someone to care for us this way. So I think what they're teaching these young ladies is great and I think what they're doing is very helpful."

"I'm having fun with people that I wouldn't even imagine meeting. They were so kind. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Girl Scout Saoirse Boyle, another Queens Person of the Week.

So, for bringing a little sweetness into the lives of others, these Girl Scouts are our Queens People of the Week.
