Several people were injured at John F. Kennedy International Airport after a fire started on an escalator early Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Nine people were treated for minor injuries following the incident at Terminal 8, the FDNY said. Four of those injured were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.
The FDNY said it received a call reporting smoke billowing from an escalator at the terminal around 7 a.m., prompting an evacuation of the terminal.
Nearly 1,000 passengers were bused to other parts of the airport due to the fire, which broke out in Concourse C, the Port Authority said. Operations at the terminal remained ongoing as of 11 a.m.
Following the incident, JFK Airport took to social media to notify travelers of potential delays impacting flights at the terminal.
"Flight operations at Terminal 8 have been impacted. Please check with your airline to determine the status of your flight," the airport wrote on X.
A spokesperson for American Airlines said as of 11:30 a.m., three of the 89 American Airline flights departing from JFK Airport on Friday had been canceled due to the evacuation.
"Concourse C has been cleared to reopen and our team is working quickly to get impacted customers on their way," the spokesperson said.
Authorities have not yet released the cause of the fire. An investigation is ongoing.
