The latest New Yorkers of the Week are a pack of petal pushers working to spread joy throughout Brooklyn. NY1's John Schiumo filed the following report.
The art of giving back is in full bloom in Brooklyn Heights.
Unsold buds are not ending up in the trash, thanks to the volunteers of Bloom Again Brooklyn.
"Flowers create happiness, because they are happy things. The colors, the textures, the fragrances," says volunteer Donna Whiteford. "And when you put it all together, it makes you feel good. It hits a lot of the senses. So it’s fun."
The nonprofit collects aging flowers from local businesses and rejuvenates them.
Every week, volunteers deliver them in person to homebound seniors and those staying in nursing homes.
The cause stems from a vision by founder Caroline Anderson. The goal is to lift the spirits of those who might be facing isolation.
"It's a visceral reaction to something beautiful," Anderson says. "To be able to talk over something beautiful and leave behind something beautiful makes people really understand that they're not alone and that the flowers represent a caring."
On this morning, that care blossomed into 120 bouquets. It's a colorful addition many look forward to.
"I love them, I love them. They're very beautiful," says Lori Farnham, who received flowers.
"Just cheers people up, makes people feel like it’s not just, you know, this dreary room," says Carol Dein, who received flowers.
Bloom Again Brooklyn started two years ago. Organizers are very proud of their budding collaborations with the community, and they do it all for free on their own time.
"They're really passionate about bringing smiles to the faces of these New Yorkers, and working with volunteers and making a connection through flowers," says volunteer Julia Einhorn.
"I love the colors and I love flowers, so it makes you feel special," says Katherine Shirey, who received flowers. "It brightens up the room, and in a way, it makes you feel like you're home."
So, for bringing new life to flowers and joy to their neighbors, the volunteers and founder of Bloom Again Brooklyn are the latest New Yorkers of the Week.
