In the mid-afternoon today April 10th, temperatures in Watertown peaked at a high of 78.

The National Weather Service issued a statement that it was a record high.  It says the previous record came in 1952 at 72-degrees.

But I did a quick search for record highs and one chart on the NWS website says back on April 10th, 1945, temperatures reached 79.

So I did what anyone who knows absolutely nothing about weather and how the NWS considers records would do. I got on social media and asked about it.

It took about five minutes for the NWS to return my tweet. Yup. That's how it's done.

Here's why the NWS still considers 78 the record high:

The climate station used to record temperatures was different.

Back in 1945, the temperature of 79 was recorded at the old Watertown COOP observer station.

It wasn't until 1949 that the Watertown Airport station was used.

The National Weather Service does not use anything before 1949 in considering records in Watertown.

And by the way, last year on this day it got down to 16 degrees, so whatever, I'm going home to start the grill and enjoy the weather.
