GREEN BAY, Wis, — The NFL Draft is this week in Green Bay. Barring a trade up or down, the Packers will draft 23rd in Thursday night’s first round.

Here are three things to watch.

Packers’ perspective

This is the eighth draft in charge for Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

It’s the last draft for retiring Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy. He led the charge in Green Bay, landing the draft. It’s already been announced that the Packers are promoting from within, with Ed Policy set to replace Murphy.

Wide receiver position

Especially with speed merchant Christian Watson expected to miss at least some of the season as he recovers from an ACL injury, many fans would like to see the Packers spend a first round pick on a wide receiver. The Packers haven’t taken a wide receiver in the first round of the draft since Javon Walker in 2002.

Keep in mind the Packers got Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, Christian Watson, Greg Jennings and Jayden Reed in the second round. They selected James Jones in the third round and Donald Driver in the seventh round.

Filling needs

The Packers will have three picks in the Top 90 of the draft: 23, 54 and 87. Needs include defensive line (both interior and edge rusher), wide receiver and cornerback. That cornerback need becomes especially acute if the Packers move on from Jaire Alexander. Nobody questions his talent, but Alexander has been injury-prone for a player the Packers pay a lot for.

Because of a compensatory pick for free agency, the Packers will have a total of eight draft picks this week.
