WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — The search for a missing 20-year-old boater in the Wisconsin River is shifting south, the Wisconsin Dells Police Department shared in an update Tuesday night.
Police said they’re now focusing efforts south of the Indian Trails boat launch.
Two boaters were reported missing after their boat capsized on Thursday, April 3. There were three boaters onboard, but one swam to shore safety and was evaluated and treated by EMS.
One of the other boaters was found dead on Monday, April 7. The deceased person was publicly identified as Luis F. Di Filippo, 75. He was from Chicago.
The second missing boater, identified by police as Francesco L. Di Filippo, has still not been recovered. He is also from Chicago.
River flow and currents have been a challenge with search efforts, which have continued since the initial missing boaters report. Groups such as Promise Parker, Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway, Diver Juan Heredia, and Bruce’s Legacy have all helped.
Police said the area they are now searching is known to be a challenging area for boat travel if people aren’t familiar with the river. Police said to be extremely cautious if you’re helping with the search. Police said searchers should not venture out on the river in a canoe or kayak, as the river levels are high and fast moving.
“Conditions on the river can rapidly change and become dangerous. If you are on the river, wear a life jacket and be wary of your surroundings. If you are not experienced navigating the river, please find someone that is so you do not put yourself and others in danger. Recovery efforts on moving water are inherently dangerous, and we do not want to compound that,” the post reads.
Police said they will share more information on search progress as it comes in.
