Sophie English is making magic on and off the lacrosse field. As a team leader, coaches say she has the perfect combination of determination, charisma and humility.
"She is not assuming, she's humble, she's not flashy, she's not like, 'Hey, look at me.' Like, it's like yeah I scored four goals, but I'm not going to brag about it. It's like, you know, next time I'm going to try and score five," guidance counselor and coach Kendra Lane said.
What You Need To Know
- Sophie English is a senior at Midwood High School. She is a team leader in both soccer and lacrosse
- In her classwork, she has a weighted average of 101.68
- She is unsure what school she will attend in the fall, but is considering her parents' alma mater, Penn State
A senior at Midwood High School, English is also an avid soccer player — and is captain of the school's varsity girls team.
"I played soccer my whole life. That's actually what I think got me into playing lacrosse," she said. "My dad had always put me in just like, recreational soccer leagues when I was little."
"When I cam to Midwood, I just wanted to try something new for the spring season. And I had heard a lot about the lacrosse team being an easy entry point into sports at Midwood, just because a lot of people come in as beginners," she added. "I think the sport is also really fun."
English's magic spills over into her school work. With a weighted average of 101.68, she is in the top 5% of her graduating class. English is a member of two honor societies, and at graduation, she will have 10 Advanced Placement classes under her belt.
"She's like one of those girls that you would just love to clone. She just has this work ethic, this drive that she wants to be the best. She's very competitive," Lane said. "As far as interaction with her peers, she's great. Everyone looks up to her. She's is kind. She's never condescending, she's only uplifting. She's encouraging, always has a smile on her face."
English added: "I think in all aspects, I am very competitive. But you also should practice sportsmanship, and practice being with your team and giving to the people who helped you get there."
As for the fall, English has her eye on a few big schools, including Penn State, her parents' alma mater.
She plans to explore finance as a possible major.
"I think freshman year I'll probably try out a bunch of different business courses, and then see which path I like," she said. "I think the main thing is just making sure you have good time management and really understanding your own balance."
A scholar, an athlete and a great piece of advice for all graduating seniors — a hat trick for this lacrosse wizard.
