MILWAUKEE — Just days after Elon Musk came to Wisconsin to give out $1,000,000 checks to two Wisconsinites in support of Judge Brad Schimel in the state's high-stakes Wisconsin Supreme Court race, and less than 24 hours after Schimel's opponent, liberal-leaning Judge Susan Crawford, won the election to the state Supreme Court, political scientists and pundits were analyzing the data and connecting the dots.

Crawford's win will maintain the high court's 4-3 liberal-leaning ideology.

"Ultimately, when we look back, the Elon Musk involvement really hurt Republicans more than it helped," said Henrik Schatzinger, professor and chair of the political science department at Ripon College.

Schatzinger also pointed to a recent Marquette University Law School poll, showing that a majority of Wisconsinites were opposed to the uncertainty tied to upcoming tariffs. Those were announced by Trump one day after the election.

"Fifty-eight percent of people who participated in the poll said tariffs hurt the economy," Schatziner said. "Fifty-eight percent said it increases inflation. I think those are numbers that really played into the hands of Democrats in this election."
