Three people were taken to a hospital after a medical helicopter crashed in a wooded area near a North Carolina airport near Wilmington Monday night, officials said.

The team members who were on the AirLink helicopter were transported for evaluation, but no patients were on board, Novant Health said in a statement.

The Eurocopter EC-135 helicopter crashed near Wilmington International Airport around 7:50 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. An online FAA preliminary report listed the injuries of one flight crew member as serious, but the extent of injuries to the other two aboard was listed as unknown.

AirLink medical helicopters are available 24 hours a day to transport patients from other facilities or from a scene to a hospital.

According to Novant, AirLink provides air medical transport to New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Sampson, Clinton, Bladen, Robeson, Onslow, Carteret, Duplin, Jones and Lenoir counties in the coastal region. The helicopters are licensed to operate in North and South Carolina.

"We are focused on the well-being of the flight crew, their families and our team members. We appreciate the prompt assistance from all area first responders who assisted us," a Novant spokesperson said regarding the incident.

Novant is still gathering information on what may have led to the crash.

"Please join us in extending thoughts and prayers for the helicopter crew, their families and coworkers," the Pender County Fire Marshal's Office posted.
