Martin Luther King Jr. Day was declared a federal holiday in 1983. The holiday honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for civil rights and social justice through nonviolence. It is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January in honor of King’s birthday, Jan. 15, 1929. 

To mark the holiday, many county and state offices will be closed. Other county services will have adjusted schedules to observe the holiday.

Here is a roundup of what's open and closed across the state. 

State of Hawaii

  • All public libraries and support offices will be closed on Monday. Libraries that are normally closed on Mondays will be closed to observe the holiday on Tuesday.
  • The Hawaii State Archives will be closed.
  • The U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii will be closed.

City and County of Honolulu

  • City and County of Honolulu offices will be closed.
  • TheBus will operate on a city holiday schedule. For schedule information, click here.
  • The Skyline will operate on a city holiday schedule, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For rider information, click here
  • Trash will be collected.
  • Transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be open.
  • Botanical gardens will be open.

  • The Honolulu Zoo will be open.
  • All satellite city halls and driver licensing centers will be closed.
  • The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed.
  • The People’s Open Markets will not be held.
  • Parking will be restricted in Lanikai over the three-day holiday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, click here.
  • On-street parking will be free, except for the meters on Kalakaua Avenue along Queen Kapiolani Park, metered parking lots and meters on specific Waikiki streets. View the list of Waikiki streets here.
  • Traffic will not be coned for contraflow.

Kauai County

  • County of Kauai offices will be closed.
  • The Kekaha Landfill will be closed.
  • All neighborhood centers will be closed.
  • All refuse transfer stations will be closed. 
  • HI5 Redemption Centers will be closed.
  • The Puhi Metals Recycling Center will be closed. 
  • Because the Waimea and Kapa‘a swimming pools are closed on Mondays, staff will observe the holiday on Tuesday.
  • Trash pickup schedules will not change. 
  • The Kauai Bus will be operating on its regular schedule.

Maui County

  • County of Maui offices will be closed.
  • Maui County Federal Credit Union will be closed. 
  • Central Maui Landfill and EKO Compost Greenwaste will be open 6 a.m. to noon. Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center
  • Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center will be open 8 a.m. to noon. 
  • Hana, Lanai and Molokai landfills will be closed.

Hawaii County

  • County of Hawaii offices will be closed.
