O,FALLON, Mo.—There are more restrictions in place now for library materials and books in the Francis Howell School District after the school board passed several new policies at Thursday night's board meeting.
It was a charged meeting with comments for and against all the policies. Their comments didn't stop the district from setting limits on what kind of books are allowed in district libraries, barring ones discussing how to buy, use or conceal drugs and alcohol and with “excessive and unnecessary” profanity or violence.
"Why do school board members have more power over what I can read then my own parents," said Harper Scheider, a junior at Francis Howell North.
One parent spoke out saying she has a system at home for monitoring what her kids read and "I don't want that power taken from me."
Kirk Wolf, a Francis Howell Families supporter, told the board there were a couple of dozen of librarians the exercise good judgment, but there are "some however, thinking there is no such thing as a child too young to be given extremely sexually explicit materials.”
Wolf then read aloud a passage about rape from the book Crank. He said it was one selected by some of the librarians.
The next speaker was against the policy, saying "you know what I am more offended by then the words in that book, is young girls getting raped."
The board also passed also a 16-step process that allows for any resident or employee in the district to challenge a book they find to be obscene, pervasively vulgar or lacks educations suitablity.
Another issue that passed will not allow teachers and staff in the Francis Howell School District to discuss gender identity with students unless they have permission from parents or guardians.
A parent pushing for that policy also mentioned not wanting to lose power as a parent.
"Parents should be main authority for their children," said Sam Young. He said it needed to be passed to protect kids and rtheir relationships with their parents.
Discussion was tabled over a proposed policy that would require students use the bathroom and locker room based on the sex listed on their birth certificates. That policy would allow students to use a single-use bathroom or locker room.
The next board meeting is Thursday, September 9th.
