During Tuesday's media availability, officials displayed a number of guns, drugs and a machine called a cocaine press seized during raids on defendants' residences in Brooklyn, Queens and Hicksville in Nassau County.
Her office said they were able to secure warrants for the raids because police officers intercepted a number of communications in which defendants discussed their illegal activities.
Katz said officials hope to have the suspect accused of leading the gun trafficking ring, who is still at large, in custody soon.
The Queens DA said the year-and-a-half investigation, sparked by violence and drug sales in and around Rufus King Park in Jamaica, Queens, has led to charges against eight men: Adrian Escobar, 33; Junior Escobar, 20; Jose Escobar, 26; Jonathan Fernandez, 31; Joseph Fernandez, 33; Jonathan Suarez, 33; Juan Escobar, 18; and Manuel Gomez, 43.
Officials say Jose, Juan and Junior Escobar are brothers; Adrian Escobar is their cousin; and Jonathan and Joseph Fernandez are brothers.
The area in and around King Rufus Park is heavily trafficked by people of all ages and is near government buildings, a major transportation hub and dozens of stores.
“There were 50 undercover buys," NYPD Deputy Chief Jerry O’Sullivan said. "Out of the 51, there were five separate gun buys in this investigation, and they were separate from the search warrants where additional firearms were recovered.”
The DA’s office said undercover agents bought cocaine and ecstasy from at least one defendant 40 different times and purchased five handguns from at least one defendant.
“I don’t think there is anything more dangerous than sending a detective into a location, with money, to buy firearms, sometimes of which they are loaded," O’Sullivan said.
The Queens DA's office also said three of the men are charged as major drug traffickers. Other charges include criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal sale of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal sale of a firearm, conspiracy, grand larceny and unlawful possession of pistol or revolver ammunition.
"...[I]ndividuals were in there selling drugs, selling guns and just making it unsafe for our communities,” Katz said.
