Police took a man into custody on Thursday after he allegedly hijacked an MTA bus in Queens, crashing it into a utility pole after the bus driver fled through a window, authorities said.

The 44-year-old man ran in front of an eastbound Q4 MTA bus, at the intersection of Linden Boulevard and 197th Street in St. Albans, around 7:23 a.m., police said.

The man, who appeared to have a firearm in his hand, then boarded the bus, at which point the bus driver opened all of the vehicle’s doors, allowing passengers to exit, authorities said.

Police announced charges against a Dwayne Gaddy Thursday night. He is charged with unlawful imprisonment, menacing, reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and criminal possession with a weapon.

Police said Gaddy announced he was “being chased” and demanded that the driver, who was separated from the man by a partition, continue driving the bus.

Police noted he appeared to be “acting erratically” throughout the entire incident.

Once all the passengers were off the bus, the driver continued driving the vehicle for approximately 13 minutes until, at 232nd Street and Linden Boulevard, the bus driver jumped out of the driver’s-side window, police said.

Authorities said Gaddy then slid by the partition and attempted to take control of the bus. Shortly afterwards, the bus struck a utility pole between 233rd and 234th streets and Linden Boulevard before coming to a stop.

At that point, he exited the vehicle and crossed the street where he was apprehended by police, officials said.

Both the bus driver and Gaddy were transported to local hospitals, where they were treated for minor injuries, police said. The NYPD said no one was seriously injured in the incident.

Frank Annicaro, a senior vice president of NYC Transit’s Department of Buses, said the bus operator is a 21-year veteran of the department, and is currently recovering at the hospital.

An imitation pistol was recovered on the bus, police said. Authorities later described it as “appearing to be a BB gun.”
