A Queens man who allegedly stabbed an FDNY EMS captain to death last week has been indicted on a murder charge, prosecutors say.

Peter Zisopoulos, 34, of Astoria, was charged with second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon Thursday morning in connection with EMS Captain Alison Russo’s death, the Queens District Attorney’s office said in a press release.

The arraignment took place virtually, as Zisopoulos is currently being held at Bellevue Hospital, the DA’s office said.

“This is a tragic case and a devastating loss for the family as well as our city,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. “Our condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues that [Russo] leaves behind.”

Russo, 61, was walking on 20th Avenue in Astoria, just steps from her station on 42nd Street, when Zisopoulos pulled a knife out of his pocket, approached her and stabbed her more than a dozen times, prosecutors said.

Zisopoulos barricaded himself inside a nearby apartment building after the random attack, but surrendered to the NYPD not long after, according to prosecutors.

Russo was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Queens, the NYPD said.

Colleagues, friends, family members and officials including Mayor Eric Adams paid their respects to the nearly 25-year FDNY veteran at her funeral on Wednesday.

Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh promoted Russo from lieutenant to captain during the ceremony.

“Lieutenant Russo was so dedicated and passionate about her work that she did it in her free time too, as a volunteer, a friend and a mentor,” Kavanagh said. “She lived a truly remarkable life.”

Zisopoulos, who could serve up to 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted, is expected to appear in court again on Nov. 29, the DA’s office said.
