HONOLULU — Honolulu Fire Department investigators have determined that a fire that caused an estimated $200,000 at the Zippy’s Restaurant in Kapahulu on June 9 was intentionally set.

The fire, which started in a shopping cart on the exterior sidewalk, was officially classified as incendiary.

The fire, which spread from the cart to the restaurant via a nearby vent, was reported just before 11:30 p.m. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the interior of the restaurant. Nine HFD units staffed with 40 personnel responded to the blaze.

The fire was brought under control by 12:14 a.m. and was deemed fully extinguished by 1:14 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The fire caused $185,000 to the building and $15,000 to its contents.

The restaurant remains closed for repair.

The case has been referred to the Honolulu Police Department for investigation.
